In the workshops of GnomeWood Forest, wobbly tables and crooked stools had always been considered a simple fact of life. The old stone floors shifted with the seasons, tree roots pushed beneath workshop foundations, and nearly every bench in the forest rocked at least a little.
Most gnomes simply stuffed scraps of wood, folded bark, cork, or random shims beneath the legs and carried on with their work.
But not Tovin Geargrin.
Tovin was a clockmaker — a patient and meticulous tinkerer known throughout Norwood for building tiny mechanical clocks filled with delicate gears, springs, and intricate moving parts. Unfortunately, his workshop bench wobbled constantly.
Every bump of the table would send tiny brass gears rolling across the floorboards and springs flying into the corners of the workshop. Worse still, the smooth wedges and scraps everyone else used would slowly slide loose from the vibration of his tools and machinery.
After rebuilding the same clock ten times in a single week, Tovin finally snapped.
He disappeared into his workshop late one evening and emerged the next morning carrying a strange little stepped wedge unlike anything the forest had seen before. Instead of a smooth angled surface, the wedge used tiny micro-steps that naturally locked into position under pressure and resisted slipping loose.
The wobble was gone instantly.
Soon the wedges spread beyond the workshops of Norwood Forest into taverns, kitchens, travel satchels, market carts, workbenches, and homes throughout the woodland.
And to this day, many gnomes still carry a few Shimbles™ wherever they go — just in case the next table starts to wobble.
